Changing settings for information and control tip messages

The Messages task enables you to change the settings for information and control tip messages.

The messages task can be started from the Manager. Go to the Main menu by pressing the 'Menu' [Alt] key. Select the Global Settings > Mesages Settings menu item and the Messages task will start.

An information message can be either a location message which tells you where you are in the system by stating the current task and control, or an internet message which tells you if you are connected to the internet or not.

A control tip message is a help message that gives you a short help tip on how to use the current control.

The Messages task contains two controls which relate to the above types of message. These two controls are called the Information Level list and the Control Tip Level list. When you start the Messages task, the focus is placed at the Information Level list control which is the first control in this task.

Information Level list

A detailed description of information messages is available in:

Reference - Operating SpeakOn > Messages and their settings.

You may read this first or prefer simply to experiment with the different settings.

The Information Level list control allows you to choose the amount of detail in the information message described above. This list contains three possible settings:

  1. 'Maximum information' (the default) - location message maximum, internet message long.

  2. 'Medium information' - location message medium, internet message short.

  3. 'Minimum information' - location message minimum, internet message short.

Using the 'Up' and 'Down' keys, scroll up and down the list to the settings level you want. To confirm the new settings, you need to select OK from the Main menu as explained at the bottom of this page.

Control Tip Level list

This list control allows you to choose when a control tip message is spoken automatically. It contains three possible level settings:

  1. 'All controls' - a control tip message is announced every time the focus changes between controls.

  2. 'Some controls' (the default) - a control tip message is announced when the focus changes between controls but only for those controls where experience shows that users may not be sure what action to take.

  3. 'Never' - A control tip message is never announced when the focus between controls changes.

Using the 'Up' and 'Down' keys, scroll up and down the list to the settings level you want. To confirm the new settings, you need to select OK from the Main menu as explained at the bottom of this page.

Please note that regardless of the Control Tip Level setting above, you can always get a help tip on the current control from the Help menu.

Similarly, you can get a help tip on how to use the current task from the Help menu by pressing the 'Help' [F1] key. This tip message is never spoken automatically.

You can move the focus between the controls above in the usual way by pressing the 'Focus' [Tab] key.

When you have finished, bring up the Main menu by pressing the 'Menu' key and select the 'OK' menu item to confirm your selection or the 'Cancel' menu item to cancel the operation. The Messages task ends and you are placed back in the Manager.
