In the 'Alphanumeric input' mode, so far you have used 'Key entry' which means that any key you enter is submitted directly to the SpeakOn control in focus in a similar way that a Standard keyboard works.
The 'Alphanumeric input' mode also supports 'Word entry' which means that each key is submitted to an 'Internal Word Edit' control. When a complete word is assembled the whole word is submitted to the SpeakOn control in focus. While this might sound complicated, it is quite easy to use as explained further below.
For brevity, the term Word control is used instead of 'Internal Word Edit' control throughout this manual.
'Word entry' is required for SpellCheck and Autocomplete regardless of the function input method ('Key table' or Braille). This is because SpellCheck and AutoComplete are applied to words rather than individual characters.
Braille grade 2 works only with 'Word Entry'.
When you switch to 'Alphanumeric input' mode, by default the Entry type is set to 'Key Entry'. You can toggle at any time between 'Key entry' and 'Word entry' by pressing:
'Entry type' (8 long)
You can also set the 'Word entry' type to be the default.
Select from the SpeakOn menu:
Global settings > Alphanumeric input settings
In the 'Alphanumeric input settings' task check the 'Word entry on start' check box.
Entering text using 'Word entry' is very similar to entering text using 'Key Entry' with the difference that keys are first submitted to the Word control. You can edit the text in this Word control in exactly the same way that you edit text in any SpeakOn Edit control and when a word is assembled from individual characters, it is submitted to the SpeakOn control simply by pressing:
Space (3)
This means that after each word submitted, you also submit a space which in most situations is either desired or does not matter. If however a Space must be avoided, you can simply toggle to 'Key entry' by pressing:
'Entry Type' (8 long)
The text contained in the Word control is submitted to the SpeakOn control in focus without a space.
Start SpeakOn and start the 'Alphanumeric input practice' task from the menu:
Tools > Alphanumeric input practice
The focus is on the 'Enter text' edit control.
Here you will enter your practice text and modify it as required.
To be able to enter text you need to switch to the 'Alphanumeric input' mode. To do this press:
'Alphanumeric input' (2 long)
In the 'Alphanumeric input using the Numerical keypad' page you typed the sentence 'Hello world.' using 'Key entry'. Here you will type the same sentence using 'Word entry'.
Toggle to the 'Word entry' by pressing:
'Entry Type' (8 long)
Set the Letters Key table function.
Using the 'Key table' technique you have learned already, type the word 'Hello'. Note that the keys are entered to the Word control, not to the SpeakOn control in focus.
You can edit the text you entered already (now in the Word control) by setting the Edit function as you learned before.
After typing the word 'Hello' you need to submit it to the SpeakOn control in focus by pressing:
Space (3)
The word 'Hello' is submitted to the SpeakOn control in focus followed by a Space. The Word control is now empty ready for the next word.
Type 'world.' Notice that you first type the word 'world' followed by the 'Full stop' which you can enter by setting the Punctuation function.
Now you have two options; if an extra space is not a problem for you or if it is desired, for example because a space is required between sentences, press Space as before. Otherwise, toggle back to 'Key entry' by pressing:
'Entry Type' (7 long)
The text 'world.' is submitted to the SpeakOn control in focus without a space.
Note again that with 'Word type' all communication (entering text and editing) is with the Word control and with 'Key entry' communication is with the SpeakOn control in focus. This means that if you wish to edit the SpeakOn control (that contains in this example the sentence 'Hello world.'), you need to toggle to 'Key entry'.
So in the above example, if you wish to remove everything you typed into the SpeakOn control, first toggle to 'Key entry'. Then set the function to Edit, locate the 'Select all' key, press Select, and then locate the Delete key and press Select.
That is all there is to typing using 'Word entry'. In the next couple of pages you will learn how to use 'Word entry' to SpellCheck and take advantage of AutoComplete.
