Downloading audio publications

SpeakOn uses RNIB Newsagent's RSS podcast feeds of their audio publications for downloads. RNIB Newsagent audio publications, depending on their length, are divided into two or four parts. You can download these publications 'on-demand'. SpeakOn has a built-in download manager that downloads files in the background. The Manager has a queue of files waiting to be downloaded and when you select a publication part (an audio file) to download, it is added to the queue; no more than four files are downloaded simultaneously.

As mentioned above, every RNIB Newsagent publication has its own RSS podcast feed and every podcast episode is a publication part. To download a publication the focus must be on the Player and the Player must be loaded with a publication podcast feed. Browse the sub-directory 'All feeds for download' under 'RNIB Newsagent audio' in the Library. Then load the Player with the podcast feed in the usual way from the Library by either pressing Enter to load and play or Ctrl + Enter to load without playing. In the Player, move Up and Down to select the publication part you want and then either select to download the file from the menu:
Download > Publication in focus, or press Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
You will hear that the file was added to the download queue in the Download Manager.

You can add as many publication parts as you like and they are placed in a queue (no more than four are downloaded simultaneously). You can shutdown SpeakOn and start it again and SpeakOn will pick up the download automatically from where you left off.

You can find more about the Download Manager and how to monitor, abort and restart your download
here

The downloaded podcast episodes are placed by default in:

Windows Vista Seven and Eight
C:\users\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\Podcast\Received_Files\RNIB_Newsagent_Audio
Windows XP
C:\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\Podcast\Received_Files\RNIB_Newsagent_Audio

You can configure this if you wish to be another folder, as explained
here

In the Library of SpeakOn, you will find the downloaded files in the
Podcast > Received Files directory.

You can add any publication RSS feed to the Favourites directory so that you do not need to browse for it again. To do this, make sure a publication feed is loaded in the Player and with the focus on the Player select from the Main menu:
File > Add publication to favourites

You can find your favourites publications in:
RNIB Newsagent audio > Favourites

You can load the Player with any publications in the Favourites directory and download them in the same way as described above.

You can delete any publication in the favourite directory by navigating to it

Note that SpeakOn implements on-demand downloading which means that you first choose which publication part to download by either its title or by starting listening to it by streaming. You can add the publication part to the download queue with a single keystroke. This way of downloading is useful for publication feeds where you are interested only in specific episodes. If you are interested in all the episodes of a particular feed, use a catcher program such as Juice or Accessible Podcast Downloader. You can use SpeakOn to listen to episodes downloaded by these programs by making the files downloaded visible in the SpeakOn library and this is explained in
here
