Downloading and converting RNIB Newsagent eText publications

You can download RNIB Newsagent eText publications and convert them if necessary to use with external players. SpeakOn has a built-in download manager that downloads files in the background. The Manager has a queue of files waiting to be downloaded and when you select a RNIB Newsagent eText publication (epub format file) to download, it is added to the queue; a number of files can be downloaded simultaneously.

It is assumed that you have obtained your username and password for RNIB Newsagent eText publications and entered these into SpeakOn as explained in the Settings sub-section of this section.

Before downloading a RNIB Newsagent eText publication for the first time, you need to configure a few options so that SpeakOn knows what conversion may be required and where to place the files after conversion. The configuration procedure and the folder structure is explained in the Settings sub-section of this section.

After you have configured the various options, you can start to download publications. The conversion is done automatically if required.

It is assumed that the RNIB Newsagent eText task is running. To download a RNIB Newsagent eText publication, the focus must be on the Library.

The following procedure works from both the Newsagent and Favourites sub-directories in the Library. The Favourites directory only contains links to publications if you added them already to your Favourites as explained in 'Reading a RNIB Newsagent eText newspaper or magazine' page in this section.

Browse the Library's Newsagent or Favourites directories until you find a publication to download and then either select to download the file from the menu:
Download > Publication in focus
or press [Ctrl + Shift + Enter].
You will hear that the file was added to the download queue in the Download Manager.

You can add as many publications as you like and they are placed in a queue (no more than four are downloaded simultaneously). You are notified when all downloads are complete and then when conversion starts and is completed.

You can shutdown SpeakOn and start it again and SpeakOn will pick up the download automatically from where you left off.

You can find more about the Download Manager and how to monitor, abort and restart your download

If you left the HTML conversion settings option unchecked, in the library of SpeakOn you will find the downloaded publications in the RNIB Newsagent eText > Current Reading directory. You can listen to these in the usual way in SpeakOn.

If you checked the HTML conversion settings option, your converted publications are placed in the following folder in the file system of your computer:

Windows Vista Seven and Eight
C:\users\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\RNIB_Newsagent_eText\Publications_converted
Windows XP
C:\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\RNIB_Newsagent_eText\Publications_converted

If you prefer to receive your RNIB Newsagent eText publications by other means such as email, ensure that these publications are in epub format.

Place these files in the following folder in the file system of your computer:

Windows Vista Seven and Eight
C:\users\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\RNIB_Newsagent_eText\Publications_to_convert
Windows XP
C:\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\RNIB_Newsagent_eText\Publications_to_convert

Then follow the following procedure:

Windows Vista Seven and Eight
C:\users\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\RNIB_Newsagent_eText\Publications_converted
Windows XP
C:\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\RNIB_Newsagent_eText\Publications_converted

Note on conversion to HTML:

The structure of this file depends on whether you check either the cleaning or restructuring options or have customized your guides. You can try this file format with your internet browser where the various HTML headings are used; the number of heading levels depends on the publication.
