Reading a RNIB Newsagent eText newspaper or magazine

RNIB Newsagent (previously known as NTNM) provide two types of eText publications; newspapers / magazines and television / radio network guides. This page describes how to read newspapers / magazines which can be found in the Library under the Newsagent directory.

The RNIB Newsagent eText task should be running. To find an eText publication from RNIB Newsagent to read, you need to move the focus to the Library control if you are not already there. To do that, press the 'Focus' [Tab] (3) key.

Press the 'Left' [left arrow] (4) key a few times until you hear a beep and a message indicating that you are at the top level (level 0) of the tree. The focus is on the RNIB Newsagent eText media directory. Press the 'Right' [right arrow] (6) key and you are placed in the Newsagent directory. This directory represents the remote RNIB Newsagent website which you cannot access without configuring the username and password given to you by RNIB Newsagent if you are a subscriber. Subscription to RNIB Newsagent is available to visually impaired users for a modest annual fee. (The username and password you need to obtain from RNIB Newsagent to enable you to read eText publications are those used to access the RNIB Newsagent eText download website. The RNIB Newsagent website is:

Setting SpeakOn to use the RNIB Newsagent eText username and password is explained in the Settings sub-section.

When you obtain a username and a password for the RNIB Newsagent website, you can use the Newsagent directory under the Library's 'RNIB Newsagent eText' media directory.

The Newsagent directory contains four sub-directories; Magazines by category, Magazines alphabetically, National newspapers and Regional newspapers.

With the focus on the Newsagent directory use the Up, Down, Right and Left keys to navigate the directory to the newspaper / magazine issue (and if relevant section) you want to read.

To start playing (reading), press the 'Select' [Enter] (5) key on the remote publication in focus.
The focus is moved automatically to the Player control. It is first downloaded and placed in the Current Reading directory and then loaded to the Player. The publication you downloaded is now in the Current Reading directory until you delete it.

The Player starts to read the publication. To stop reading, press the 'Select' key again.

With the 'Left' and 'Right' keys, you can select the navigation unit. Depending on the publication, you may have between one to four levels of hierarchy navigation. In addition you have the following navigation units: article, paragraph, sentence, line, word, character. With some long articles you might have in addition the '50 lines' navigation unit.

With the 'Up' and 'Down' keys, navigate in increments of the navigation unit selected.

While you can navigate during playing, it is easier to control navigation when the Player is stopped.

In newspapers or magazines, navigation levels represent section hierarchy. In national and regional newspapers, level 2 represents articles. In magazines, the hierarchy is more complex and articles can occur at any level. Therefore if you wish to read a publication sequentially, use the 'All levels' navigation unit which guarantees that no articles would be missed while navigating with the Down and Up keys.

You can copy text to the clipboard and bookmark publications, and this is explained
