This page contains information on exchanging podcasts with other applications.
To be able to access a podcast, you need to specify its feed URL address. You can open a podcast feed from a URL you obtained from another source. You can also obtain the URL from any of its podcasts in its Library for use with another application.
In addition you can import podcast URLs generated by other applications. You can also export all your Favourites podcasts URLs so that you can share them with other applications.
If you want to open a podcast feed from a URL you obtained from an external application or the internet do the following:
Make sure that the focus is on the Library.
In the Main menu, select:
File > Open feed from URL
The 'Open feed from URL' task opens. The first control in this task is an edit control - simply type the URL of the podcast feed and press Enter. The task ends and the focus is transferred automatically to the Player and after a few seconds if the URL is valid, the first episode in the feed starts to play.
If you want you can add the feed to your Favourites sub-directory in the usual way; in the Main menu select: File > Add to Favourites - subscribe for streaming
Note on feed URLs: a URL is the internet address of a podcast feed. URLs are usually available in many of the podcast directories on the internet and websites which provide podcast feeds.
So, for example, if you wanted to listen to the 'Info Sound' magazine podcast, paste to the described above edit control the URL of the feed copied from the Info Sound website which is:
http://www.infosound.org.uk/podcast.xml
Most podcast feeds are public and the procedure above for opening a podcast feed from a URL where the only information required is the feed's URL applies. There are however some relatively rarely private podcast feeds which require a username and password. There are two additional edit controls in the above task for this purpose.
Sometimes you may want to obtain the URL of a podcast feed that you found in the SpeakOn directory so you can specify this URL to another application such as a podcast receiver.
To do this:
In the Library, make sure that the focus is either on a feed (under the All Feeds sub-directory) or on a feed playlist file ('.rls') under the Favourites or the Temporary sub-directories.
Copy the URL to the clipboard using the 'Copy' [Ctrl + c] keys.
Paste the URL into the appropriate place in your podcast receiver using the 'Paste' [Ctrl + v] keys.
It is a common practice in podcast applications to import and export podcasts using a format called OPML. These are files with the '.opml' extention.
To import podcasts (exported by other applications or by another user of SpeakOn) do the following:
In the Main menu select:
File > Import OPML file to Temporary
The 'Import OPML File from file system to Temporary directory' task opens.
The operation of this task is self-explanatory. Type a name for the exported OPML file. Navigate to the OPML file you want to open. Select 'Open, end task' from the Main menu. The previous content of the Temporary directory is deleted and replaced with the newly imported podcast.
You can stream these imported podcasts in the usual way and add them to your Favourites if you wish. The content of the Temporary directory stays the same until you import another OPML file or search for new podcasts.
To export your Favourites directory for use by other applications do the following:
In the Main menu select:
File > Export Favourites to OPML file
The 'Export Favourites directory to OPML file on the file system' task opens.
The operation of this task is self-explanatory. Navigate to the folder where you want to save the exported OPML file. Select 'Save, end task' from the Main menu.
You can import this OPML file from other applications.
