Setting file associations

File associations enable you to use SpeakOn as an audio player launched directly from a File Manager such as Windows Explorer or My Computer, as well as Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

A comprehensive introduction to using SpeakOn with file associations is available in this tutorial:

Tutorial > Common Media Operations > Using SpeakOn to play audio from your file system or the internet.

Associating file extensions with SpeakOn

To associate file extensions with SpeakOn do the following:

Bring up the Menu and select:

Global Settings > File Associations

You are presented with a checklist which includes all the file extensions available for association with SpeakOn. Simply select (press [Enter] (5)) the file extensions you want associated with SpeakOn. Bring the Main menu and select 'OK end task, return to Manager to confirm your selection'.

If you are sure that you want all file extensions to be associated with SpeakOn, select first 'Check all' from the menu before selecting OK from the menu as described above. Similarly, if you want all file extensions to be associated with a different player, first select 'Uncheck all' from the menu before selecting OK from the menu as indicated above.

In most computers the above setting is all that is required to associate SpeakOn with a file extension; this means that when you click on the relevant file in Windows Explorer or My Computer, SpeakOn starts automatically. If you find that the above setting in SpeakOn does not work, leave it checked and try to make sure that the relevant file extension in the settings section of the player that comes up, is unchecked. For example in Windows Media Player in Windows XP, this setting is located in the menu:

Tools > Options, in the 'File Associations' tab. In Windows Vista and 7, Windows Media Player has no means to set file associations and this is done from Windows itself.

Note that if you associated a file extension with SpeakOn and then changed your mind, and disabled the association by unchecking the relevant file extension, depending on the settings of your computer, the association may not revert to its original setting. However, it is usually easy to associate any media player with a file extension again from either the player itself or from the context menu opened when the focus is on a file with the desired file extension.

Note that the file extensions available in the checklist are based on the associations available by default and any additional plug-ins you have installed and indicated to SpeakOn as described in the previous page in this section 'Adding audio format support'.

File extensions supported

The following file extensions for media files and playlists are supported out of the box: .mp3, .ogg, .wma, .wav, .asx, .m3u, .pls, .wpl, .spx.
Note that .m4a is available in Windows 7.

The following file extensions are available with additional installed programs or applications:

.ram, .rm, .ra, .smil, .flac.

Note that .ogg and .spx are available by default but better navigation is available with additional plug-ins as explained in previous page of this section, 'Adding audio formats' support'.

SpeakOn supports MIME media types associated with the above file extensions as available in an Internet browser.
