Launching SpeakOn directly with a media task

This option is for advanced users who want to launch SpeakOn directly with a particular media task. Normally there is no need for this as the last media task you use is placed automatically at the top of the list in the manager.

With the method described below you can launch SpeakOn directly with a particular media task by modifying the properties of a SpeakOn shortcut on the computer desktop.

First copy your SpeakOn shortcut on your desktop (you don't want to modify the original one as it will be removed by the installer once the next version of SpeakOn is installed). Call it something else, for example 'SpeakOn Radio'. Press Alt + Enter to open the Properties' dialog box. The first edit box is called Target which is the one you want to modify. What you need to do is to add one or two parameters at the end of the line after a space (very important). There are two types of parameters (note that they start with a dash (hyphen) sign):

-s followed by various characters specifies the start mode. The following are the possibilities for the start parameter:

-sp The focus on the Player and the last media played is loaded.

-sl The focus on the Library at level 0 for the relevant media (the root).

-slu The focus on the Library at the user's own media (level 1).

If you don't specify the start parameter at all, the Player is not loaded and focus is on the Library.

-m specifies which media type to load; the media follows after the -m in lower case. (Note also that any spaces in names must be replaced with underlines).

The following are the possibilities for the media parameter:

-mcd

-mpodcast

-maudio_books

-mtext_publications

-mtunein_radio

-mv_i_podcast

-mv_i_radio

-mrnib_newsagent_etext

-mrnib_newsagent_audio

-mother_media

The following are the possibilities for the load parameter:

-ltrue

-lfalse

(Note that without this parameter the default is 'false' meaning that the focus is on the Library).

Here is an example of how the Target edit box in the shortcut properties dialog should look:

If you want to start the RNIB Newsagent eText task and load publications in the Player:

C:\Program Files\SpeakOn-MediaSuite\tcf\MediaSuite.exe -mrnib_newsagent_etext -sp

and if you want to start the podcast task with the focus on the Library:

C:\Program Files\SpeakOn-MediaSuite\tcf\MediaSuite.exe -mpodcast

The following are additional arguments which are unlikely to be of relevance to users and used internally with file associations:

If no '-' precedes the argument, it is the path to a media file or resource on the internet; both file paths and URL formats are valid.

-spa The focus on the Player and the media indicated is added to the existing playlist.

If the path to the media is available, the 'Other Media' media task is started. If only the path to the media is available, the Player is started, with the -spa argument the Player is loaded but not started.
