Bookmarking media and copying text to the clipboard

You can bookmark both audio and text media and copy text to the clipboard.

Bookmarks

You can bookmark media using an additional control in the media task - the Bookmarks list control. To reduce clutter, this control is only available if the media can be bookmarked and at least one bookmark has already been made.

You can usually bookmark media which reside on your local machine. You cannot bookmark a media stream such as internet radio and similarly you cannot bookmark files which are located somewhere on the internet.

The Bookmarks list control contains a list of all bookmarks defined for the media collection. There is always a default bookmark called 'Current reading' which represents the last current reading point when the focus moved to the Bookmarks list control. The reading point refers to the position of the reading cursor in the media collection; for example, the particular sentence within an article in a newspaper you are reading or a position in an audio file.

To add a bookmark use the Main menu by pressing the 'Menu' [Alt ] (9) key and select the 'Bookmark > Add bookmark' menu item.

To delete a bookmark use the Main menu as above and select the 'Bookmark > Delete bookmark' menu item.

To position the reading point at a previously defined bookmark, press the 'Up' or 'Down' keys until you get to the bookmark you want. Press the 'Select' key to start and stop playing from the bookmark you have chosen.

You can also delete all bookmarks by using the Main menu as above and select the 'Bookmark > Delete all bookmarks' menu item.

Return to the Player control by pressing the 'Focus' [Tab] (3) key.

Copying text to the clipboard

A text document may appear as a single item or may be split into separate items such as articles in a newspaper or chapters in a book.

The following explanation uses an article as an example but applies equaly to any text.

This feature enables you to copy the name of an article, the whole article or a portion of it into the clipboard. This way you can transfer chunks of text to your favourite word processor or text editor. There are three ways to copy text depending on your requirement:

Article name

To copy the name of the article, select from the Main menu:
Edit > Copy article or channel name

Complete article

To copy a complete article, do the following:

  1. Select it all by pressing [Ctrl + a] - SpeakOn announces the selection;

  2. Copy it to the clipboard by pressing [Ctrl + c] - SpeakOn announces the copying.

Article portion

To copy a portion of an article do the following (it is preferrable to make sure that the Player has already stopped):

  1. Use a convenient unit of navigation, say, 'sentence' and navigate (up or down) to the point where you want the selection to begin. Then press [Ctrl + b] to mark the beginning of the selection - SpeakOn announces the beginning of the selection;

  2. Scroll down to one sentence beyond the end of the selection you require and press [Ctrl + e] - SpeakOn announces the end of the selection;

  3. Press [Ctrl + c] to copy your selection to the clipboard.

As usual when pasting from the clipboard to your text editor or word processor etc, use [Ctrl + v].

Note: The text copying facility applies to any text file that SpeakOn can read. This includes text based media such as newspaper publications and books as well as any plain text files (with the .txt extension) which you may put yourself under the Other media directory.
