Browsing the Library and finding media

Once any media task is started, to find media to play you need to move the focus to the Library media tree control by pressing the 'Focus' [Tab] (3) key.

Library media tree control

The Library media tree control (or in short the Library control) combines the various media sources available into a single tree structure. The tree is comprised of nodes. There are two types of node - directory nodes (which usually contain other nodes) and media nodes (which do not contain other nodes). All nodes which are grouped under a single node (or the tree root) are said to belong to the same level.

The top level of the tree (level 0) comprises of directory nodes which group different media. These directories are refered to as 'media directories' and depends on the type of media handled by the media task.

When you navigate through the tree, the node type and its name are announced.

Tree navigation follows the Microsoft Windows convention where the tree root is on the left. You can navigate between the levels of the tree by using the 'Left' [left arrow] (4) and the 'Right' [right arrow] (6) keys. You can navigate between the nodes at the same level by using the 'Up' [up arrow] (8) and the 'Down' [down arrow] (2) keys. If you try to navigate beyond the top level (level 0) or beyond a tree leaf which is always a media node you will hear a beep and a short error message. Similarly, if you try to navigate to before the first node or after the last node at a particular level you will hear a beep followed by a short error message.

Media nodes include MP3 files, podcast feeds, etc.

To select a media node to play, press the 'Select' [Enter] (5) key.

You cannot play a directory node unless it is indicated as playable. If you try to play a non-playable directory, you will hear a beep and a short error message.

When a playable directory or media node is selected to play, the focus will move automatically to the Player control and the Player will start to play the first item in the media collection. Media collections can be a playlist of MP3 files, articles in a publication or episodes in a podcast feed. No matter what the source, the media is presented to you in exactly the same way in the Player.

Playing specific media is explained in:
Listening to mainstream media
and
Listening to VI services media

The Main menu is context-sensitive. The options available to you depend on the type of media directory you are in and your location in the tree. Therefore to make sure that you are presented with relevant options, make sure that the focus is located in the right place in the tree.
