Media tasks - a quick overview

This section describes in general the operations that you need to perform to listen to any media.

Usually, you will start SpeakOn from the start menu or from the SpeakOn icon on the computer desktop. In this case, SpeakOn starts with the Manager which allows you in turn to start the media task you need. It is also possible to start SpeakOn directly from the file manager (Windows Explorer or My Computer) and an Internet Browser (for example Internet Explorer or Firefox), in which case SpeakOn starts directly in a media task as explained in the last page of this section.

Media tasks are tasks which enable you to find and listen to different media on the Internet and on your local computer. These include streamed media and files in a variety of formats, text files using a speech synthesizer, and collections of audio files, text files or a combination of both.

Each media task has a name which clearly indicates what it does; the Podcast media task enables you to stream and play local podcast files, the Tunein Radio task enables you to listen to live and on-demand radio and so on.

In each media task there are at least two controls; the Player which enables you to listen to audio and text media and the Library control which enables you to find media to play. A third control is available sometimes to provide extra functionality for example if you wish to bookmark a location in a file.

When you launch any media task, the focus is placed on the Player control.

To move the focus from one control to the other, use the 'Focus' [Tab] (3) key; the control with the focus is announced.
