Changing folder locations for communication with other applications and devices

In the Library, the Current Reading is a sub-directory under the RNIB Newsagent eText directory where the publications in epub format are downloaded to. The Archive is also a sub-directory under the RNIB Newsagent eText directory where a user can save a single article or a complete publication.
The Publications Converted directory is not visible in the Library and is used to optionally store publications converted to HTML for use with other programs and devices. These publications can be optionally restructured and cleaned.

The location of all the above folders can be changed to suit the user's requirements if necessary. The procedure to do this is identical for all the above folders and so for brevity, only the changing of the Current Reading folder will be explained below.

The Current Reading sub-directory is associated by default with a folder location on your computer. This means that any folders and files stored in this default folder are visible in the Current Reading sub-directory in the Library.

There are two options; you can either add your own publication files folder's location to the Current Reading sub-directory or you can use the default folder location mentioned above. Both options are explained below.

1. Adding an existing publications file folder location to the Library

This setting is only available when the focus is on the Library.

The folder location is added to the Library's Current Reading sub-directory. This is the most versatile option; you can add one folder location which effectively replaces the original default folder location. This folder is not affected by SpeakOn and you can use the same folder with other players as well if you wish.

The folder you add can be a folder on your computer, or a folder that appears on your computer as part of a device connected to it; for example, a USB device such an external player. (Note that in the case of an external device, make sure that after connection it always maps to the same drive otherwise this method will not work.)

The folder you add can also be a folder on your computer which represents a Cloud storage service such as OneDrive or DropBox. Using the latter option, as the content of the Cloud service folder appears on both your computer and the external device, you can download publications in SpeakOn and read these on an external device which supports Cloud storage services such as a phone or another computer. Similarly you can also use another device to download RNIB Newsagent eText publications in epub format and read them in SpeakOn.

To add a folder location, press the 'Menu' [Alt] (9) key to bring up the Main menu. Select the:
Settings > Library RNIBNewsagent eText, Current Reading - add or remove folder locations

The Library Directory Manager task starts.

The Library Directory Manager task has two controls; the Folder Locations list and the Folders Tree. The Folder Locations list contains the folder locations you have already specified for any media folders you have added. The Folders Tree presents a tree view of the folders available on your computer.

You can add any folder above the one that contains your publication epub files. For example, if you have the following folder structure: C:\Folder 1\Folder 2\publication epub files You can add Folder 1 or Folder 2.

Say that you want to add the Folder 1 location, navigate the tree and find Folder 1 on your computer. Press the 'Select' [Enter] (5) key to add the folder to the Current Reading sub-directory; you can add only one folder and it is shown in the Folder Locations list control.

If you make a mistake, to remove a folder location, in the Folder Locations list control locate the folder you want to remove and select the 'Remove folder location' item in the Main menu.

Once you have finished adding the folders, select 'OK, End task, return to Manager' from the Main menu. The RNIB Newsagent eText task is ended and you are placed in the Manager task. Start it again and you will find the folder you added in the RNIB Newsagent eText Current Reading sub-directory in the Library; any changes you make to these folders such as downloading or deleting publications files are reflected automatically in the Library.

2. Using the default Current Reading folder

SpeakOn uses by default the Current Reading folder location as its publications download folder. In addition if you prefer, you can copy your publications files in epub format to the default Current Reading folder so that you can read them in SpeakOn.

The default Current Reading folder location is at:

Windows 10, 8, 7 and Vista
C:\users\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\RNIB_Newsagent_eText\Current_Reading
Windows XP
C:\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\RNIB_Newsagent_eText\Current_Reading
The default option may suit those who use SpeakOn to both download and read RNIB Newsagent eText publications.

Note, you can use the options one or two above but not both - for maximum flexibility, option one is recommended.

Note that all the default folders associated with the directories mentioned at the top of the page are located under
\My_SpeakOn_Media\RNIB_Newsagent_eText
The folder names are self-explanatory.
