Publication navigation settings

The navigation settings which are applicable only to publications in the epub format are important and determine the ease of navigation in a publication. In some cases, with these settings set incorrectly, the complete publication content might not be available in the Player.

One of the main advantages of the epub format over plain text is the ability to navigate segments of the publication. For example, a typical fiction book is divided into chapters. In this case, the Player should provide what is termed level 1 navigation. Some books are divided into parts which in turn are divided into chapters and in this case, the Player should provide level 1 and level 2 navigation. Some reference books might provide more levels; according to the epub format, up to six levels of navigation might be available.

In an epub book, all content (the text and graphics) is listed in what is termed the Spine of the book where the reading order is specified. Usually publication segments such as chapters are kept separately in which case level 1 navigation is available. An epub book also contains a Table of contents which should point to various segments of the book and define higher levels of navigation if they exist.

The quality of epub publications varies enormously; some are provided by reputable organizations and are of a high standard. Others might be converted, for example, from plain text and are poorly constructed.

SpeakOn uses the Table of contents to enable the user to navigate the publication efficiently. The problem is that while the Table of contents always exists, it might contain insufficient information and in some cases, practically no information at all. The following settings are designed to extract the most usable navigation information from the publication.

To perform the settings required, bring up the Main menu and navigate to:
Settings > Publications navigation

This sub-menu in turn gives you the following two options:

  1. Automatic, Load Table of contents if available, otherwise load Spine

  2. Load Spine always. Use when Table of contents is incomplete or corrupted

The first option, which is checked by default, indicates that the Player should load the Table of contents if it detects that it contains meaningful information; otherwise it loads the publication's Spine which guarantees to contain all the book content but supports only up to one level of navigation.

This automatic detection of a complete Table of contents works in most situations but not all. If you suspect that part of the book content is missing, use the second option which uses the Spine, an option which guarantees that all content is included.

You can select one of the above options but not both; when one is checked the other is unchecked automatically. After you press the Select key [Enter] (5), the Text Publications task closes to enable the option you selected. Start the Text Publications task again and the publication content should reflect your settings.
