Searching a publication

Searching a publication is applicable only to the epub format and generates a virtual publication containing segments which satisfy the search terms you specify. You can then navigate this virtual publication in the usual way. A publication segments can be a chapter in a book or an article in a newspaper or magazine.

To search a publication for the first time, bring up the Main menu by selecting:
Edit > Find segments in publication and construct a new publication on the fly.
Alternatively press * 'Find' [Ctrl + F3] or [Ctrl + f]

The 'Find all segments in publication' task starts and you are placed in the 'Search for' edit control. Type the search term and press 'Select' [Enter]. The search task ends and the focus is back on the Player.

The Player is loaded with a virtual publication which contains only the segments that meet the search term you specified. Navigate this virtual publication in the usual way.

If you want to revert back to the original complete publication, bring the 'Search all segments in publication' task again and clear the 'Search for' edit box; then press 'Select' and you are informed that the original complete media is available. The search task ends and the focus is back in the Player loaded with the complete publication.

To search a publication again with your previous search terms, bring up the Main menu by selecting:
Edit > Find again segments in publications and construct a new publication on the fly.
Alternatively press # 'Find' [Shift + F3]

You can set Search options and type powerful search terms as detailed below.

Search options

The 'Search all segments in publication' task contains in addition to the 'Search for' edit control, three controls which allow you to set the search scope (described further below) and options 'Match case' and 'Match all words'. Move between controls in the usual way by pressing the 'Focus' [Tab] key.

Search terms format

The search terms format you can type in the 'Search for' edit control is described below using examples.

Typing:

Manchester football
Searches for segments that contain both the words Manchester and football and both can be anywhere in the segment.

Manchester | football
Searches for segments that contain either the words Manchester or football and both can be anywhere in the segment.

"Manchester football"
Searches for segments where these words appear together.

Manchester -football
Searches for segments where the word Manchester appears but not football

-"Manchester football"
Note in the line above that both the words Manchester and football are surrounded by double quotes. Searches for segments where both words do not appear together.

Search scope

The second control is the Search scope list control which contains two or three items based on information available in the publication.

The following items can be included:

Search segments in levels

Levels which are headings and publication segments content are Both searched based on the search terms entered.

Search levels only

Levels are headings which are searched (without searching segments content) based on the search terms entered.

Search for page numbers

The search is conducted to include all segments in the publication that belong to a page number specified in the search. Only page numbers are allowed; the search terms format described above is not applicable. This item is only available if the page information is included in a publication.

To search for segments when the focus is in the 'Search for' edit control, press 'Select' as described above.

To search when the focus is on either of the check box controls, bring the menu and select:
'OK - find segment in publication - end task, return to player'
