Downloading podcasts

The Tunein Radio database contains thousands of podcast episodes and you can download podcast episodes 'on-demand'. SpeakOn has a built-in download manager that downloads files in the background. The Manager has a queue of files waiting to be downloaded and when you select a podcast episode (which is an audio file) to download, it is added to the queue; a number of files are downloaded simultaneously.

Podcasts can be found in the Library under the 'Podcast' directory under the index and also under shows that you have preset such as BBC or any other broadcaster which provides podcasts.

When you navigate the Library to a show, under the Recent Episodes directory you will find various media available where the type of media is indicated as part of its title; it can be either 'Stream or download' or 'Stream on demand'. The first type, as the name implies, is a podcast file which can be streamed or downloaded. The second type is 'Stream on demand' such as BBC 'Listen Again' which can be streamed but not downloaded.

With 'Stream or download' type media, press as usual Ctrl + Enter to load the Player (assuming you want to download but not listen to it). The Player is loaded with a single podcast episode. With the focus on the Player, either select to download the file from the menu:

Download > Episode in focus, or press Ctrl + Shift + Enter. You will hear that the file was added to the download queue in the Download Manager.

You can repeat the procedure above and add as many episodes as you like and they are placed in a queue, although no more than four are downloaded simultaneously.

You can shutdown SpeakOn and start it again and SpeakOn will pick up the download automatically from where you left off (if the server that you download the podcast from supports this feature).

You can find more about the Download Manager and how to monitor, abort and restart your download in
here

The downloaded podcast episodes are placed by default with all other podcasts in other SpeakOn tasks in:
Windows Vista Seven and Eight
C:\users\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\Podcast\Received_Files
Windows XP
C:\yourusername\My_SpeakOn_Media\Podcast\Received_Files

You can configure this if you wish it to be another folder, as explained
here

You will find the downloaded files in the Podcast task's Library in Podcast > Received files directory.

Note that the Tunein Radio database contains the individual podcast episodes (not the RSS feed) as presented in the Library. SpeakOn implements on-demand downloading which means that you first choose which episode to download by either its title or by starting listening to it by streaming. You can add the episode to the download queue with a single keystroke. This way of downloading is useful for podcast feeds where you are interested only in specific episodes. If you are interested in all the episodes of a particular feed, obtain the feed URL and use a catcher program such as Juice or Accessible Podcast Downloader. You can use SpeakOn to listen to episodes downloaded by these programs by making the files downloaded visible in the SpeakOn Library and this is explained in
here
