Listening to CD DAISY audio books

This page describes how to use CDs containing DAISY books. The DAISY format supported is version 2 which is used by the RNIB in the UK and in many other countries. It does not support password protected DAISY books such as those available from some suppliers in the US.

The CD task should be running. To listen to a DAISY book, insert a DAISY CD in your computer CD drive.

If you are not already there, move the focus to the Library media tree control by pressing the 'Focus' [Tab] (3) key. In the Library control, press the 'Left' [left arrow] (4) key a few times until you hear a beep and a message indicating that you are at the top level (level 0) of the tree. The focus is on the CD media directory. Press the 'Right' [right arrow] (6) key, the format of the CD is detected automatically and you are placed at a media item which represents a DAISY book on your CD. Please note that the last operation may take a few seconds while the CD drive starts to spin. Usually a CD contains only one book but if there are more than a single book on the CD, you will find them all listed in the directory.

To start to listen to the book, press the 'Select' [Enter] (5) key. The focus moves automatically to the Player control and the Player starts to play the book. To stop playing, press the 'Select' key again.

With the 'Left' and 'Right' keys, you can select the media navigation unit. Depending on the DAISY book, there will be between level 1 to level 6 navigation units to navigate between DAISY levels. There will always be 5 minutes, 1 minute, 15 seconds and 5 second navigation units to skip within a DAISY level.

With the 'Up' and 'Down' keys, navigate in increments of the navigation unit selected. With the 5 and 10 second navigation units, you can jump up or down in 5 and 10 second increments within an audio segment of the book. You can do that after playing has stopped or during playing.

You will notice that when playing DAISY audio books the Player's behaviour is slightly different to when other types of media are played in that after navigating the media, the Player starts automatically to play without the user having to press the 'Select' key; this behaviour is consistent with other DAISY players.

If you stop listening to the CD and come back to it later, the Player will start the book where you left off.

Bookmarks

The user can have as many bookmarks in the media as required. This operation is explained in this manual
here

Play optimization

To reduce CD background noise, SpeakOn uses a method of copying segments of the book to the hard drive before they play. This is still the default method and works well for most books with sometimes a delay of a few seconds before a book segment starts to play.

You can eliminate any delay and CD drive background noise by preparing the book on the hard disk before starting to play and this optimization, which can take a few minutes, stays in place until you listen to another CD book. To optimize a book before reading, when the focus is on the Player in the Main menu, select:
Play > Optimize CD media to eliminate delay and drive background noise.
